Asda currently has a really awesome deal on their specs'.
See, my prescription sunglasses and spare glasses were in my CAR. Which was stolen. As my contents insurance only covered up to £100 and I paid £225 for two pairs of glasses (AFTER a 20% discount voucher and a "buy one pair get one pair half-price deal") many sad faces were made.
But, Asda has a deal on -- any George pair of glasses £50 including lenses, any designer pair £70, and any two pairs, including designer, for £90. They pay for a suitable amount of lens-thinning and whatever.
I was also due an eyetest voucher from work (otherwise it would have been £15.50). It was ASDA so I only expected a basic test, but I scooted along.
Three-quarters of an hour later, my eyes are SORE from being tested, but that's probably a good thing. We've tested them a million different ways, I know that they're weak but healthy, that my astigmatism is slightly worse, and that I need to watch my right eye as it's slipping back to being a lazy eye. (Not new -- it did that as a teen. It's caused by my left eye having such strong lenses it relies on them, but I'm a wee bit paranoid about going cross-eyed. Still, there are exercises for that.)
The glasses selection was pretty good, and the lady who helped me pick was awesome. I was originally going for the titanium frame (I like the strength) but she told me outright that the styles they had didn't suit so we looked for styles with fairly thick arms which would be hard to bend (My glasses live on my nose. They need to be able to survive everywhere my face goes).
The only charge I paid on top of the £90 was £10 to have lens tinted for sunglasses. (They did have glasses with tinted lenses included but the huge frames drownded my wee face.) Fortunately my office has generously given the annual gift of £50 of Asda vouchers. Were my eyesight slightly less crap my office would give me a glasses voucher for computer use also. Sadly this stops when you can no longer find the computer.
New prescription:
Right eye: sph -3.25 cyl +275 axis 45
Left eye: sph -5.50 cyl +175 axis 150
Two pairs of glasses
Designer frames
1.67 superthin lenses (thickness is decided by prescription, going up to 1.9)
Anti reflective, anti scratch, UV protection
Tinted sunglasses lens in one pair
£100
-£50 Asda voucher
___
£50 on my card \o/
There is no way they are not taking a loss on these. I feel really bad for independent opticians who are gonna get hit by this, but dear god, it's good to not pick between mortgage payment and glasses.
They accept both the office DSE vouchers and NHS vouchers, so if you're in need go take a look.
