So, uh, I was rereading the Chalet School books and they mentioned The Cherry Tree carol. So I looked it up.
O then bespoke Mary,
so meek and so mild:
‘Pluck me one cherry, Joseph,
for I am with child.’
O then bespoke Joseph,
with words most unkind:
‘Let him pluck thee a cherry
that brought thee with child.’
I CAN'T THINK WHY WE DON'T SING THAT ONE ANY MORE.
O then bespoke Mary,
