I returned home yesterday evening to discover I had left my freezer door slightly ajar the night before.

This in itself was not a disaster. It happens from time to time. My freezer door is slightly buggy, and sometimes if I don't check it it doesn't seal properly. I don't recommend it, but hey, the meat still looked frozen so it was all good.

Until tonight when I discover everything might be a wee bit *too* frozen. In fact my top drawer is frozen completely shut. Pulling does not help.

Now I was crampy. I have a cold. I was not having a good day. So, at this point, what do you do? Unplug the freezer, letting it defrost and risk losing food in both it and the fridge above? Abandon the top drawer forever?

Me? In a move which I suspect will surprise only those who don't know me, I grabbed a breadknife.

It's okay. You can look. I still have all my fingers. I hacked the drawer free, emptied it, poiled boiling water in it, then commenced hacking at the rest of the ice. Half an hour later, a good deal of the ice is gone, the drawer is back in, and my kitchen floor is a bit damp.

Surprisingly enough I feel better. Possibly attacking things with a breadknife is the way to cure hormones?
